EBFA Q&A

Bottom trawling is a method of fishing divided into 1) benthic trawling, which involves towing a net at the bottom of the ocean and 2) demersal trawling, which involves towing a net just above the benthic zone. It is one of the most efficient fishing technique ever designed and heavily contributes to EU food sovereignty as it helps bringing ashore 25% of total E.U landings in weight and value.

The European Bottom Fishing Alliance represents 14 E.U. countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Sweden.

The EBFA was launched by fishing organizations from 14 E.U countries.

The EBFA was founded in March 2022 by fishing organisations to support the use of active bottom gears as a sustainable activity. We gathered to offer a united voice and to showcase the reality of fishing operations so that the European legislation could be based on science and facts.

The chair of EBFA is Ivan Lopez Van der Veen. He is also the chairman of LDAC (Long Distance Advisory Council) as well as member of the executive committee for the Spanish Fishing Confederation
