The Project
What is the EBFA?
The European Bottom Fisheries Alliance (EBFA) represents over 20,000 fishermen and 7,000 vessels across the EU. Our mission is to advocate for the environmental, economic, social, and cultural significance of bottom-contacting fishing gears. We support sustainable practices and technologies that minimise impact on the marine environment, and support coastal communities and its people.

Our values
Protecting the Fishing Industry
We advocate for fair regulations that not only secure fishing activities but also ensure the sustainability and long-term viability of our fisheries. By engaging with policymakers, we strive to create a balanced approach that supports both the industry and environmental conservation.
Supporting Coastal Economies
Bottom-fishing plays a crucial role in sustaining local economies, generating thousands of jobs in fishing communities across Europe. EBFA works to enhance the socio-economic stability of these areas, promoting initiatives that strengthen local businesses and encourage responsible fishing practices.
Preserving Tradition and Heritage
Fishing is an integral part of Europe’s cultural heritage. We are dedicated to preserving traditional fishing practices while also embracing innovation to meet contemporary challenges. Our aim is to honour the past while ensuring that fishing communities thrive in the future.
